Scientific Overview of Ocular Lubricants in the United States

The wide array of ocular lubricants on the market can be overwhelming for both patients and eyecare providers. However, understanding the specific needs of the patient can help significantly narrow down the options. Factors including daytime vs. nighttime use, dry eye sub-type, presence of viscosity-enhancing agents for increase retention, preserved vs. preservative-free, delivery system, and clinical evidence should all be considered when choosing the right artificial tear for patients. Systane family of ocular lubricants offers options in all of the aforementioned categories. Systane Hydration PF (aqueous-deficient dry eye) and Systane Complete PF (all major types of dry eye) have been shown to provide good lubrication, protection, and retention on ocular tissues; improve clinical signs and symptoms of dry eye; and are both available in MDPF bottles.
