A recent publication found in International Ophthalmology addresses the ability of digital visualization systems, specifically, the NGENUITY®3D Visualization System (3D HUD), to favorably affect the outcomes of Macular Hole (MH) surgery performed by surgeons-in-training when compared to use of the Standard Operating Microscope (SOM) for visualization.
This retrospective medical records review included all consecutive patients undergoing operations for MHs between 2017 and 2020 by surgeons-in-training. MH retinal detachments, traumatic MHs, and MHs using inverted internal limiting membrane flap closure were excluded. Minimum hole diameter, maximum hole diameter, total surgical time, and MH closure rates were compared between the two groups.†
Surgeons-in-training operated on 51 patients using 3D HUD, and 63 patients using SOM. Patient demographics and preoperative disease-state descriptors were comparable between both groups.†
- MH closure rate was significantly higher in the 3D HUD group than in the SOM group (86.3% vs 60.3%; p < 0.004)†
- Only the visualization technique was associated with MH closure differences between groups†
- No postoperative adverse events were reported in either group†
