A recent publication found in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery provides further evidence that addresses the ability of digital visualization systems, specifically, the NGENUITY®3D Visualization System, to decrease light intensity and provide possibly faster postoperative visual recovery for cataract surgery patients.
In this retrospective pilot study, patients were grouped into two visualization approaches: use of the standard operating microscope with NGENUITY (NGENUITY group) or use of only a standard operating microscope (traditional group). Length of surgery, light exposure time, light intensity (unchanged during the case) recorded as a percentage of maximum intensity illumination on the operating microscope, as well as postoperative day 1 and postoperative month 1 visual acuity were recorded.†
Findings included:†
- No difference in mean light exposure time
- Mean light intensity in the NGENUITY group was significantly less (57%) than in the traditional group (18.5% ± 1.5% vs 43.3% ± 3.7%; p < 0.001)
- The NGENUITY group achieved a postoperative day 1 visual acuity that was within 2 lines of the postoperative month 1 visual acuity a higher percentage of time than the traditional group (81.5% of eyes vs 54.2%; p = 0.04)
- No intraoperative or postoperative complications were noted in either group
